  • Natasha Poonawalla Stuns In An Ochre Slubbed Silk Gown At Jeff Bezos And Lauren Sanchez’s Wedding

    Kolkata:

The rape of a law student at a Kolkata college has brought infighting in the ruling Trinamool Congress out in the open as party leaders take potshots at each other. As the party distanced itself from MP Kalyan Banerjee’s and MLA Madan Mitra’s controversial remarks, MP Mahua Moitra has termed the statements “disgusting” and said Trinamool differs from other parties in calling out such statements, irrespective of who makes them.

Mr Banerjee has shot back with a personal attack, saying that Ms Moitra has returned after her honeymoon and launched an attack on him. He also accused her of “breaking a family”, a nasty remark referring to Ms Moitra’s wedding with former BJD MP Pinaki Misra last month.

This comes months after a public spat between Trinamool MPs in Delhi and the party leadership won’t be happy with this at a time it is gearing up for the Assembly polls in West Bengal next year.

A 24-year-old law student was raped in the college’s union room on June 25. Main accused Manojit Mishra, 31, is a college alumnus and the other accused Promit Mukherjee and Zaid Ahmed are believed to be current students. All three have been arrested. It is alleged that Manojit raped the student, while the other two shot videos to blackmail her later. The college’s guard has also been arrested. Manojit Mishra is part of the Trinamool’s youth wing, but the party has insisted that this won’t protect him from the harshest punishment.

Soon after the matter came to light, Serampore MP Kalyan Banerjee made a controversial remark that many flagged as victim-blaming. “If a friend rapes a friend, how can you ensure security? Will there be police in schools? This was done by students to another student. Who will protect her (victim)?”

Another problematic statement came from party MLA Madan Mitra. “This incident has sent a message to girls that if someone calls you when the college is closed, don’t go; nothing good will come of it. If that girl had not gone there, this incident wouldn’t have happened,” he said.

  • Seven Engineers Suspended Over Bhopal Bridge With 90-Degree Turn

    Bhopal:

The Madhya Pradesh government on Saturday suspended seven engineers, including two chief engineers of the Public Works Department for the ‘faulty design’ of the new Rail Over Bridge in Aishbagh area of the city with an unusual 90-degree turn.

“I took cognisance of the serious negligence in the construction of Aishbagh ROB and ordered an inquiry. On the basis of the inquiry report, action has been taken against eight PWD engineers,” Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said on X late in the evening.

Seven engineers including two chief engineers were suspended with immediate effect while a departmental inquiry will be conducted against a retired superintendent engineer, he added.

The construction agency and design consultant have been blacklisted, and a committee has been formed to make necessary improvements in the ROB, the chief minister said.

“The ROB will be inaugurated only after improvements are made,” he added.

The newly built over-bridge became a subject of criticism and ridicule, with local residents and netizens questioning its design and wondering how vehicles would negotiate the sharp 90-degree turn.

The engineers against whom action was taken for the alleged faulty design were chief engineers Sanjay Khande and G P Verma, in-charge executive engineer Javed Shakeel, in-charge sub-divisional officer Ravi Shukla, sub-enginner Umashankar Mishra, assistant engineer Shanul Saxena, in-charge executive engineer Shabana Rajjaq, and retired superintendent engineer M P Singh, said PWD additional chief secretary Neeraj Mandloi.

The government also blacklisted architect firm M/s Puneet Chaddha and design consultant M/s Dynamic Consultant, he said.

Built at a cost of Rs 18 crore, the ROB was built to improve the connectivity between Mahamai Ka Bagh, Pushpa Nagar and the station area with New Bhopal, benefiting some three lakh people.

Last week, the PWD formed a committee to find a solution in order to ensure safe movement of vehicles on the bridge.

Officials associated with the construction had argued that they had no other option but to build the bridge this way given the paucity of land and presence of a metro rail station nearby.

If a little extra land is made available, the 90-degree sharp turn can be converted into a curve, officials had said.

  • Indian Cricketer Yash Dayal has been accused of exploitation on the pretext of marriage by a woman from Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Indian pacer, Yash Dayal, has been accused of exploitation on the pretext of marriage by a woman from Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad. The woman has lodged a complaint through the Chief Minister’s online grievance portal, IGRS. In her complaint, the woman alleged that she had been in a relationship with the cricketer for the past five years, during which she was emotionally, mentally, and physically exploited. “For the last five years, the complainant was in a relationship with a cricketer. The man emotionally, mentally and physically exploited her by misleading her with the promise of marriage. He introduced the complainant to his family as their daughter-in-law, which made her trust him completely,” the complaint stated.

The woman further alleged that when she confronted Dayal about the alleged deception, she was subjected to physical violence and mental harassment. “During the relationship, the complainant was made emotionally and financially dependent on him. Later, she found that the man was involved in similar relationships with other women as well,” the complaint said.

She claimed to have reached out to the women’s helpline number 181 on June 14, 2025, but said that the matter did not progress at the police station level. Owing to financial and social helplessness, she turned to the Chief Minister’s office seeking justice.

“She has chats, screenshots, video calls, and photos etc as evidence,” it added.

“The request is to investigate this matter promptly and impartially, and to take legal action against the accused. This step is important not only for her, but also for all girls who fall victim to such relationships,” it concluded.

Billionaire Elon Musk on Saturday issued a blistering critique of the Senate’s latest draft of Donald Trump’s sweeping tax-and-spending bill, calling the legislation “utterly insane and destructive” right as the chamber prepared to open debate on the nearly 1,000-page proposal.

“The latest Senate draft bill will destroy millions of jobs in America and cause immense strategic harm to our country,” Musk posted, warning Republican leaders against pushing forward with the legislation. “Utterly insane and destructive,” he added. “It gives handouts to industries of the past while severely damaging industries of the future. The remarks revived tensions between the Tesla CEO and Trump’s administration, particularly following Musk’s recent departure as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge). Earlier this month, Musk also denounced the House version of the bill, describing it as a “disgusting abomination.”
